The shooting outside the Magic City Classic at Legion Field occurred at around 7:50 p.m. local time, per KBTX.

The Magic City Classic is the largest historically black college and university (HBCU) football game in the country. According to the event’s website, around 200,000 participants and 60,000 visitors attend annually.

One person was detained following the shooting and transported to the Birmingham Police Headquarters for questioning, according to the BPD. The suspect and injured victims have not been publicly identified at this time.

Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene, the BPD confirmed. The cause of the shooting is currently unknown.

The incident is believed to have involved two parties, Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett told reporters. “This was two senseless acts of violence,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those who are affected,” Pickett said in the press conference. “...I’m very grateful that more people weren’t injured, that with all the spectators and families, this did occur after the game. For the most part, it was off of the property.”

“I’m very, very grateful that our officers who were running in the direction of the gunfire … none of us were injured,” he added.

The BPD is asking anyone with video footage or knowledge of the incident to contact the detective at 205-254-1764, or if you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 205-2577.
