Why George and Amal Clooney Aren’t at the 2026 Met Gala

The stars are out at the 2026 Met Gala, but Hollywood power couple George and Amal Clooney were notably missing from the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The ever-stylish couple was absent from this year’s gala, which has thedress code “Fashion Is Art”in honor of the Costume Institute’sspring exhibition, “Costume Art.”George and Amal were last seen at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala in New York City on April 27.

The Clooneys last attended the 2018 edition, which celebrated “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Amal, a co-chair of the event, was one of the evening’s most daring dressers when she stepped out in a metallic Richard Quinn corset paired with skinny purple trousers and a floral train. George opted for a classic tuxedo.

The Clooneys made their debut as husband and wife at the 2015 gala, where Amal wore a tiered red Maison Margiela gown by John Galliano in honor of the “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition. She sported a crimson lip to accent her dress’s studded bodice and ruffled maxi skirt. George, for his part, again wore a traditional suit, albeit with a cherry red pocket square to tie in the hue of Amal’s dress.

In November, George spoke about how aging has shaped his perspective on marriage during aninterview with CBS News. “We’ve never had a fight, we’ve never had an argument,” he said. “You get to a point in life, where you just go, ‘Well, why would that be a discussion or an argument? We have a really amazing relationship because we’re also so supportive of each other.’”

The actor continued, “And so when I was younger, I don’t know that that would have been the case. I think I would have found things to, you know, stick my chest out about that I can go now, ‘It doesn’t matter. I don’t care.’”
