That experience, he said, eventually transformed their dynamic into a close-knit group
Ted McGinley, known for his role as the jock Stan Gable inRevenge of the Nerds, recently opened up about his initial experience working alongsideRobert Carradine, who portrayed the nerdy Lewis Skolnick, in the 1984 comedy.
In an interview withPage Six, McGinley shared that he and Carradine didn’t get along at first.
“When we started, we were sort of real adversaries,” McGinley, 67, told the outlet.
At the start of filming, McGinley found himself struggling to connect with his costars, particularly Carradine and the rest of the nerds.
“When I showed up on set, they wouldn’t talk to me, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me,” McGinley recalled. “And I was like, ‘Okay, so this is where it’s going to be,’ and that’s where it was for quite a while. I truly didn’t like the nerds!”
However, the dynamic began to shift after a couple of weeks on set. As production moved into two weeks of night shoots, McGinley said the cast — including costars likeJohn GoodmanandTimothy Busfield— began to bond.
“That’s when it all changed,” McGinley explained. “We all had to be there together, and so that’s when we became sort of one big, beautiful group.”

Those long nights together allowed the cast to form stronger connections and helped ease initial differences.
McGinley also reflected fondly on his memories of Carradine, who died by suicide at the age of 71 in February 2026 after a"valiant struggle" with bipolar disorder.
“Robert was so purely in the moment and so happy to be that guy with this pocket protector nerd pack,” McGinley said. “And I remember looking, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be successful … he’s brilliant,’ and so was Anthony Edwards. They were a great team.”

“I get teary-eyed every single time. I'm so used to people saying not kind things in my regard,” McGinley said, acknowledging how meaningful the praise has been. At the event, he also shared how playing the easygoing husband of Christa Miller’s Liz and next-door neighbor to Jason Segel’s Jimmy has been a career highlight.
