Rays ace starts Game 5 on short rest with World Series survival at stake

Drew Rasmussen will start Game 5 for the Tampa Bay Rays, their second consecutive do-or-die contest in this World Series.

Rasmussen started Game 2 and will make this start on just three days' rest, a significant departure from his routine during the regular season, when the club often afforded him extra rest. Rasmussen has undergone three major arm surgeries since 2017.

"Ras is going to take the ball and give us what he can give us," Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters.

And the Rays gave him another extra day of rest before this World Series, pushing him to Game 2 instead of starting the opener on regular rest. Yet the Rays fell down 3-0 in this Series and exhausted much of their bullpen reserves in winning Game 3 in 12 innings to extend it to a Game 5.

Cash said he called Rasmussen after the pitcher left Tropicana Field in the early hours of Wednesday morning to tell him he'd be getting the ball.

Rasmussen will be opposed by Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski.

"I'm not overly pleased with how things went in Milwaukee the other day," Rasmussen told reporters before Game 4.
