About a month ago, theLuciferandBattlestar Galacticaalum, 52, soft-launched herOnlyFans page. Now, she's going public about her decision to "take the stigma off a lit bit."

"At my age, I am in my 'do what I want' phase of life," Helfer tells PEOPLE. "I'm tired of being told what to do and how to do it. I'm looking at it as something to have fun with and something that I can be in control of."

Helfer says her content will feature a mixture of professional photography and self-shot photos and videos, as well as livestream Q&As.

"I'm keeping with my brand — albeit the sexier side of my brand," she says. "It'll be a mix of artistic shots with great photographers and pictures and videos of quiet and silly times at home feeding my goats or weeding my garden. I posted a picture [recently] of me out in my garden watering my plants and I had my work boots on, but it was hot outside so I was in a bikini."

"I enjoy shocking a little bit," she adds. "Would I shock my parents with the images? Probably. But they saw [me in]Playboy, and they appreciated why I had done it. My passion is my job as an actor, and I'm using this platform as an extension of my creative, fun and flirty side."

Born in Donalda, Alberta, Canada, Helfer first started modeling at 17 after being discovered in line at a movie theater by a modeling agency scout. She started in high fashion and eventually posed for brands like Victoria's Secret.

"I'm certainly not shy in that department," she says. "Even now I have a nude in the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles, and it's actually been up there for a few years."

After doing shoots for publication likeMaxim,GQandEsquire"with no control or compensation," Helfer says she had an eye-opening experience shootingPlayboyin 2007 to promote her sci-fi seriesBattlestar Galactica.

"I got to choose the photographer, and I had photo approval and I got paid," she says. "I chose to keep it higher end in keeping with my brand. I see OnlyFans as an extension and a modern day growth from those type of press outlets from the past."

Since her soft-launch, Helfer says she's been "pleasantly surprised" by the fan response.

"Most people I've talked to have been very supportive," she says. "I've had a few people that are not involved with my page be concerned, and rightly so. I'm not saying there shouldn't be concern. But I tell them, 'Hey, this is what I'm doing. I'm in control of it. I don't have to post anything I don't want to post. I'm not being pushed into anything, and I can shut it down whenever I want if I decide to.'"

"Am I pushing some of my own boundaries? Probably," she adds. "But I have to press the upload button, right?

She also plans todonate a portion of her earningsfrom OnlyFans to charities aligned with her long‑standing advocacy for animals.

"Animal charity specifically has always been close to my heart," she says. "I've done it at least the last 20 years. So if I have any success with OnlyFans, then it will actually help me be able to donate more money than I already do and stay involved in ways than I already do."

"I'm just happy to continue working on great projects and keep moving forward," she says.
