"When you have that kind of support it's easier to pick yourself up and face another day, face another situation. It's important," he said.

She grew up in Philadelphia and studied art in college

Nashormeh grew up in Philadelphia and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pennsylvania State University in 1976.

She later moved to New York, where she received a master's degree in education from Bank Street College of Education. According to herLinkedInprofile, she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Penn State.

She is an artist and educator

Delroy isn't the only artist in the family. Nashormeh's art comes from a fascination with documentation, according to theartist statementon her website.

"I was constantly fascinated by the photos I'd seen on mantlepieces, coffee tables, in bureau drawers, picture albums, and shoe boxes of family members we visited. Incorporating these images into my own work helps to bring these people alive," she said.

Nashormeh works across mediums, from watercolor paintings of landscapes to photography and collage. For Nashormeh, photography became a way to engage with her loved ones and feel present in memories.

"I became an active participant in these events and memories, by using the pictures in photo-collage compositions, acknowledging my presence in a different way," she said in her artist statement.

Nashormeh is also an arts educator. According to her website, she began her teaching career in the Philadelphia public schools, which led to a fellowship in arts management from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

She also served on the California Arts Council for seven years, where she helped support and promote arts initiatives across the state. During that time, she also created a lecture series on the art of the Harlem Renaissance for theSan Francisco Museum of Modern Arts, highlighting the cultural and historical significance of the influential movement.

Nashormeh further taught as an adjunct professor of African American Art History at the City College of San Francisco before later returning to elementary school education, according to her website.

She and Delroy married in 1990

Delroy and Nashormeh tied the knot in 1990, celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary in 2026. Delroy shared the not-so-serious secret to a long and happy marriage onThe Jennifer Hudson Showin February 2026.

"The secret to the longevity of my marriage is because I'm so easy to get along with," he joked. "Y'all believe that, right?"

He got serious when discussing what it meant to have his wife's support for his career.

"It means everything. It means the world, because the ups and downs of the career, the ups and downs of life, and to have that steady support is sometimes the difference between being able to get through certain situations and allowing those situations to rock you and upset you," he said. "But when you have that kind of support it's easier to pick yourself up and face another day, face another situation. It's important."

Delroy and Nashormeh welcomed their son, Damiri, in 2001, perSFGate.

The birth of their son came with another big change, a move from New York to Oakland, Calif. The opted to raise their son in Oakland after Nashmorah was tired of the New York winters, but said she was "dead set" against moving to Los Angeles, according toSFGate.

The actor shared onThe Jennifer Hudson Showthat it was Damiri who first called him with the news of his Oscar nomination.

"It felt so right, cosmically, that it came from my son, because my son has seen the ups and downs of maintaining a career," he said. "For him to be sharing that moment with me of acknowledgement, of quote unquote success, meant the world. It meant the world to me that it came from him and it just felt right."
